Hyslop Calls for RBS to Think Again on Linlithgow Closure
Local MSP Fiona Hyslop is calling for the Royal Bank of Scotland to reconsider plans to close their Linlithgow branch, after a shock announcement that the bank plans a series of closures across the country.
As a reserved issue, the UK Government is responsible for the regulation of banking services across Scotland, and own a controlling stake in Royal Bank of Scotland. The Scottish Government has said they will continue to engage closely with banks and with senior representatives from all major companies in the financial services industry.
Following the announcement, Fiona said;
“This is another blow from Royal Bank of Scotland to our local communities following the closure of their Whitburn Branch earlier this year. This will come as disappointing news for both customers and particularly for staff who will now be worried about their future so close to Christmas.
“Centralising services to Bathgate and Livingston does not help local businesses or elderly and vulnerable customers who depend on the use of their local bank branch.
“It is extremely important that the banks listen to the needs of customers in Linlithgow and recognise that there is a continued need for face-to-face provision as well as cash withdrawal and deposit machines.
“And as banking regulation is a reserved issue, the UK Government needs to act to ensure the industry is properly regulated and customers and businesses are properly catered for across Scotland. I am aware that the Minister for Business, Innovation and Energy, Paul Wheelhouse, has urged the UK Government to defend customers and take steps to ensure communities, particularly vulnerable customers and small businesses have access to day to day banking services and will mitigate as much as possible the economic and social impact of the planned closures.”
